Maps of the USA and Canada with historical maps and timeline, and index for the United States. Published by George F. Cram of Chicago in 1888, this atlas contains a USA place-name index with over 58,000 entries. Just a mouse-click shows location of any place on its map. Most of these towns no longer exist, having been renamed, deserted, or absorbed into neighboring metropolitan areas. One must have this atlas to find old US towns!
Cram's printers were masters of multi-color cerographic printing, and their maps were superior to rivals Rand-McNally, Tunison, etc. These maps are scanned at 250 pixels-per-inch, making very attractive and legible prints.
Additional data and software is included: a complete 2005 USA and Canada postal list of 60,000 towns is combined with a database of county histories, dates, parent and successor counties. A Search utility check will use our improved Soundex to match any name in our database of 120,000 places. You may then click to locate any place on resulting list, or obtain its county history. The GEDCOM Inspector
Input any GEDCOM and it will perform dozens of types of checks for event place and date info to locate these places and verify if town and county are possible and consistent with the date of the event. The event date and place are checked for correct notation and then compared to the database of 120,000 North American places and histories. The event is checked against other vital events and flagged if improbable (for instance, married before age 16). Also included is a family relations check for the obvious (mother died before birth of child) and the less obvious (1st cousin marriages). About 50 such checks are performed on each individual in the GEDCOM. The output is a text file with corrections and suggestions where to find records.

Due to 20th-century wars and revolutions, place-names for almost half the old German Reich (which then included half of modern Poland and much of northeastern France) have been changed beyond recognition since 1899. Also, the Danish and Norwegian languages have since 1899 changed their methods of spelling. Remember that Poland was mostly a part of Russia in this era, as were the Baltic nations of Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Also, Albania and much of northern Greece were then in the Ottoman Empire.
